Biography
Dr Blix studied at the universities of Uppsala, Columbia and Cambridge, and was appointed to an associate professorship in international law at Stockholm University in 1960. Between 1962 and 1978 he was a member of the Swedish delegation to the Disarmament Conference in Geneva, while holding several other positions in the Swedish administration. From 1978 to 1979, he was Foreign Minister of Sweden; from 1981 to 1997 Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency; and from 2000 to 2003 head of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission for Iraq. In 2003 he was made chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, an independent body of international experts funded by the Swedish government. The commission presented its report ’Weapons of Terror’ in 2006.
