On 6th December, Pugwashite Professor John Finney (Physics, UCL) spoke to Physics students at University of Nottingham about some of the complex ethical and legal questions raised by emerging technologies, particularly remotely-controlled and autonomous vehicles (including weapons systems).
John recently contributed to a UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology study, focusing on the particular problems that arise when ‘cognitive’ machines are allowed to make life-or-death decisions.
Special thanks to Professor Philip Moriarty (Physics, UoN) for hosting the event.
