Advancing UK and European leadership in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament

This project aimed to promote European dialogue for progress in the May 2010 NPT Review Conference. It was led by the President of International Pugwash, Amb. Jayantha Dhanapala, who chaired the 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The resources developed as part of this project, which received generous support from the Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation, the Ploughshares Fund and St John’s College Cambridge, did indeed have major impact both before and during the NPT Review Conference. Amb. Dhanapala was widely published and cited in the media during Spring 2010, and many of the insights he shared in the run-up to the NPT Review Conference were developed during his time in the UK in Autumn 2009.

The project’s most important and unique contribution was to the very significant progress made in implementing the Middle East Resolution. This resolution resolved to convene a conference in 2012 on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction and appointed a Facilitator to consult and prepare the conference with continuing responsibilities after the Conference.
